How to play Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe online
Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe is the deep, strategic upgrade to the classic game: nine tic-tac-toe boards arranged in a big 3×3 grid, where your move decides which board your opponent must play in next. It turns a game kids solve in an afternoon into a genuine battle of foresight. This free browser version plays against the computer at three levels, with no downloads or signup.
Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe rules
- Nine boards. The big board is made of nine small tic-tac-toe boards.
- Your move sends them. Whichever cell you play in a small board decides which small board your opponent must play in next — play the top-right cell, and they're sent to the top-right board.
- Win a small board by getting three in a row inside it — that whole board becomes yours.
- Win the game by winning three small boards in a row on the big grid.
- Free move. If you're sent to a board that's already won or full, you may play in any open board instead.
Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe strategy — how to win
- Think about where you send them. Every move is also a gift — don't hand your opponent a free win in the board you send them to.
- Avoid feeding free moves. Sending them to a finished board lets them play anywhere — usually a mistake.
- Play for the center board. It's part of four winning lines on the big grid — the most valuable square to own.
- Look two boards ahead. A move that wins a small board is worthless if it sends your opponent somewhere they win two.
- Set up double threats on the big grid, just like classic tic-tac-toe — two ways to make three boards in a row at once.
Frequently asked
How do I play Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe? Play in one of the nine small boards. The cell you choose sends your opponent to the matching small board for their turn. Win small boards to claim them, and win three claimed boards in a row to win the game.
How is it different from regular Tic-Tac-Toe? Your move controls where your opponent plays next, so you have to think about both winning your board and where you're sending them — which makes it far deeper than the original.
What happens if I'm sent to a finished board? You get a free move — play in any open board you like.
Is it free? Yes — no signup, no downloads, no installs.
